Italy Student Visa

EU/EEA students can enter Italy with a valid passport or ID card and are allowed to pursue a degree in Italy without a visa for as long as they wish. However, they must register with the Questura (police station) within 8 days of arrival to obtain a residence permit.

Non-EU students must obtain a student visa before entering Italy. If studying for more than 90 days, they will need to apply for a residence card (permesso di soggiorno) at the local post office within the first 8 days of arrival. The residence card, along with the visa, will permit them to stay in Italy for the duration of their studies, and there is a fee for the residence card.

 Depending on the length of the study program, you can apply for either a Type C or Type D Visa.

• The Type C Visa is a short-term visa that permits entry into Italy for stays under 90 days. Upon arrival, you need to complete a declaration of presence to legally live in the country.

• ​The Type D Visa permits a stay in Italy for over 90 days. Similar to the C Visa, it is only valid for entry into Italy. 

However, with the Type D Visa, you must apply for a residence permit to remain legally in the country. The residence permit application must be submitted after obtaining the Student Visa and within 8 days of your arrival in Italy.

Once you have received the letter of acceptance or admission for your chosen course of study, you can verify your eligibility for an Italian student visa and proceed with the application process. You will need to provide the following documentation:

• Entry visa application form

• Recent passport-sized photograph

• Valid travel document with an expiration date at least 3 months beyond the requested visa duration

• Proof of accommodation in Italy: either a proof of university accommodation reservation or proof of private rental accommodation contract.

• Proof of sufficient financial means to cover the stay in Italy (at least € 467,65 per month for the academic year, a total of € 6,079 per year)

• Health insurance, unless the applicant is entitled to healthcare in Italy through agreements or conventions with their home country

• Enrollment or pre-enrollment confirmation for the course to be pursued in Italy

Language Certificate to Study in Italy

​

You are not required to provide a language proficiency certificate, such as IELTS, if you plan to attend courses taught solely in English at the university, and if you have completed courses in English during your previous education. Students who have completed their prior education at an English-speaking high school or higher education institution can meet the language requirements without needing a language certification.

In this case, the student must provide an official statement or certificate on official letterhead, stamped as proof that their previous education was conducted in English.

However, if your previous education was not in English, some universities may require proof of English language proficiency, such as IELTS. While not all universities may request this, taking an English proficiency test remains a mandatory requirement.

If you wish to enroll in courses taught in Italian in Italy, you will need to demonstrate your proficiency in the Italian language. Different universities accept various types of certificates, with CELI and CILS being the most commonly recognized. In some cases, applicants who can prove their Italian language skills may be exempt from taking the Italian language test before acceptance. Whether this test is required depends on the individual university.
