Italy Startup Visa

Italy startup visa is aimed at non-EU innovators who wish to establish a startup business in Italy, particularly in the innovative sector or to join an already established startup company in Italy.

Startup visas are subject to the availability of annual immigration quotas set by the government. This visa can also be obtained by those who are already living in Italy on a residence permit for other reasons. In order to convert the residence permit a person holds into a startup one, it is necessary to obtain the certificate of no impediment and then apply for the conversion at the local Italian post office.

Main Requirements for the Italian Startup Visa

Among the main requirements to set up a start-up business and obtain the start-up visa are as follows:

  • The ISV Certificate of No Impediment (''Nulla Osta ISV'').

  • Demonstrate the availability of at least €50,000 to be used solely to develop and operate the start-up business in Italy.

  • Submit education and employment history and detailed information regarding their business idea and model.

  • Evidence that they have suitable accommodation in Italy.

  • Evidence of income earned during the previous financial year in their country of residence (i.e. income tax return). Said income must be higher than the minimum level envisaged by the law on exemption from co-payment of health costs (€8,400).

Italy Startup Visa can also be obtained by those who intend to join an already existing startup company in Italy under the below conditions:

  • the investment of at least €100,000.

  • the foreign applicant must cover one of the following positions in the startup company: chairman, CEO, member of the board of directors, or auditor.

  • they must also work as self-employees for the company (i.e., as independent consultants) and receive remuneration.

The law allows start-up visa applications to be filed through a certified incubator, an Italian company with specific features that can host start-ups and provide technical, legal, and management support, as well as equipment and space for start-ups to develop their businesses.

Duration and Renewals

Once you obtain the visa, you must apply for an Italian residence permit at Questura (Police Headquarters) within 8 days of arriving in Italy. Your permit will be received in 2-3 months. The residence permit for a startup visa is initially valid for one year and can be renewed if the business meets the conditions of renewal.
