Italian Citizenship by Residency

Italian Citizenship by Residency
Italian citizenship by residency is available to foreign nationals who have lawfully resided in Italy for at least 10 years, have a sufficient income, have no criminal records, and are prepared to renounce their original citizenship, if needed.
The process and requirements depend on factors such as the applicant's country of origin and whether they have ties to Italy (e.g., through descent or marriage). Typically, requests for Italian Citizenship by Naturalisation by Right of Residency in Italy can be submitted after at least ten years of lawful residence in Italy, as long as the individual has adhered to immigration laws and Italian tax obligations during this time, as mentioned before.

The Ten-Year Criteria May be Reduced:

-
to 3 years if one or both of the applicant's parents, grandparents, or ancestors were Italian citizens by birth.
-
to 4 years if the applicant is a citizen of a European Union (EU) country.
-
to 5 years if the applicant is a refugee, stateless, or he/she is over the age of 18 when he is adopted by an Italian citizen.
-
to 7 years if the applicant is the adoptee of an Italian citizen.

During the residency period, it is important to exhibit good moral character, adhere to Italian laws, and have no criminal record. Additionally, the applicant must demonstrate a sufficient level of proficiency in both spoken and written Italian, which will be evaluated through an Italian language certificate or qualification.
